Miracles Still Happen

On the way home from Mississippi after Thanksgiving, we received a phone call from my mother in law giving us some horrible news.

She told us that my oldest niece, McKensie, had been in a horrible car accident and had been air lifted to a hospital in Memphis. My mother in law also told us that the reports they had gotten from the doctors at the hospital did not look good and there was a good chance she was not going to make it through the night.

We were in Birmingham, AL at the time and got on another highway and headed to Memphis.

It was a long car ride… we were calling Mimi (Scott’s mom) and Stephanie (McKensie’s mom and Scott’s sister) over and over for updates. They had to drive from Jackson, MS to Memphis, TN. As you can imagine their drive was horrible… Trying to get to her as fast as they could with out wrecking themselves and not knowing if they would get there and that she would be alive.

They arrived in Memphis about an hour before we did and they were able to walk back and see McKensie in the ICU… in a coma and on a ventilator. The outcome looked very grim and Stephanie was not given much hope from the doctors.

Shortly after we arrived Stephanie spoke with a neurologist and again the news was disheartening. The only good news was… “she has a better chance of survival than an hour ago”… but the other news was severe brain damage and she may never wake up.

We were all sad, but did the only thing we knew to do… pray.

We had Seth and Levi with us and we could not go into the ICU with small children, actually we couldn’t even go into the waiting room of the ICU.

Scott checked us into a hotel. I was all alone with two sleeping boys and didn’t know what else to do, but pray. Then I posted about McKensie on facebook and solicited prayers from my friends.

Here are my posts…

I wanted to share this, because I want the world to see that miracles still happen and that God answers the prayers of righteous people. I love the facebook posts, because you can see the numbers of people praying for her (144 people posted or messaged me that doesn’t include the phone calls we received or emails… not to mention this was just my facebook page. People were praying on McKensie’s, Mimi’s, and Bonnie’s facebook page) and the progression of God healing her body. We give Him all the glory!

In addition to facebook, I know we had churches in 4 different states praying for her. Our God is an awesome God!

“Please pray for my niece McKensie. She was in a horrible car accident and is in the hospital in Memphis. Is does not look good. We are praying for God’s favor on her life. All I know right now is she has severe brain damage and is on a ventilator. We were on our way home from Mississippi after spending time with familyMcKensie included. We are now in Memphis with Mimi and Aunt Stephanie. Prayers appreciated.”

“Update on McKensie… she started becoming a little more responsive last night.(squinting her eyes) Still not conscious yet, but she is also heavily sedated… so that plays into that as well. They think she may not have as bad of brain damage as originally said (Praise the Lord) and now it is just a waiting game. They have said she will survive, but don’t quite know yet what her injuries will be and the extent of the damage yet.”

2nd update! Praising the Lord for righteous prayers offered up! McKensie just woke up and she is doing fine. She has bleeding on the brain, so she is not 100% but she is talking and responsive. SO much better than what we were originally told. We are so appreciative of our friends lifting her up in prayer.”

“Thanks again for all of your prayers! She is still doing well, but still in the ICU. However, it looks like she is on the road to complete recovery! She went from… “She may never come out of this coma” to talking, responding to tests, and acting like a teenager… even asking for her boyfriend (ha) We praise God for His awesome power!”

Posted Monday morning…

“Update… Her CT Scan came back showing her brain is healing. Doctors said it is a true miracle! 🙂 Hopefully she will be taken out of ICU today and moved to a regular room. Thanks again for the prayers.”

“Update on our niece McKensie. She is still progressing. She was released from the ICU in Memphis and is now in a regular room in a Jackson, MS hospital. She is in lots of pain, but her brain scans are coming back great! Thanks again for all the prayers.”

Here is Mckensie around lunch time on Sunday. She had started to wake up that morning and they had just removed the tubes from her chest, nose, mouth… and the ventilator. She still looks so beautiful!

The boys with Mimi at the hospital. All Seth knew was that McKensie had a bad boo boo. He drew her a picture.
We couldn’t really be at the hospital with small children in the ICU, so we were pretty much stuck in the hotel. However, we were right there in downtown Memphis and I had a stroller.
I had never been to Memphis before… We got to walk some of the streets (in the day time I might add) and see some sights. One of our favorite things we did was ride the trolley train through downtown. The boys loved it!

Here it comes…

Enjoying the view

So thankful for God’s miracles and all of my family!
