Some of you North Carolinians and government buffs will know the answer to that question…
Last week, we all attended a funeral for the mother of one of our good friends Trey. He was in our wedding and he and his family live in Greenville, SC. Trey is also our dentist, but Trey grew up in the Raleigh area, so some of his family is still here. His Mom’s funeral was in Clayton.
We arrived at the church and it was so pretty sitting out in the country and there was a long receiving line and we were close to the back. We were standing behind a nice looking older couple. I noticed the man had a NC state pin on his lapel.
I was intrigued by his pin, because I haven’t seen much “State Spirit” in NC since we moved here almost a year ago.
You see in SC, the State flag is everywhere! It’s on menus, t-shirts, belts, hats, ties, business signs, political signs. I even have a pair of flip flops that leave the imprint of the state flag on whatever I walk on…they were made for the beach, so when you walk on the sand…you can leave the flag behind.
Anyways…I haven’t seen anything like that here and we live near the Capital, so needless to say, I was intrigued by someone showing “State Spirit.”
I asked the nice man where I could find a pin like that. He said, “You could ask Jim Hunt for one.”
I say, “Who’s Jim Hunt?”
The man then smiles really big and says, “Why don’t you ask the young lady sitting in the pew who Jim Hunt is?”
So I do, and her reply was he was the man I was talking too. Then she said…”He’s the former Governor of NC.”
At this point, I am feeling really dumb, but he goes on to tell me that he was Governor for 16 years. He takes his state pin off and puts it on Seth. I of course tell him we are from SC and I used to work for Congressman, now Senator Jim DeMint.
I then say…”I just have one question…are you a republican or…?”
Before I could even finish he said, “No…You and your family have moved into Democrat territory now.”
Oh well…I’ll pray for him! haha
No really, he was a super nice man and his wife was really sweet, pretty, and classy.
Just thought was a funny story!
If you look carefully, you can see the pin on the Noah’s Ark of Seth’s outfit.
